๐ข Decision Lineage
Decision lineage is not a chain of outcomes. It is a continuity of reasoning โ the traceable trajectory of intent that runs from the moment a possibility is taken seriously to the moment a decision becomes visible.
What It Is
A decision is only the visible point of a longer reasoning trajectory. Lineage begins before the decision appears.
Before a choice becomes visible, a trajectory has already run: a representation was chosen over other possible representations, a method was selected, a hypothesis was tested, data was selected rather than other data, and assumptions and inferences accumulated along the way. Decision Lineage is the traceable continuity of that trajectory โ of intent, not just of outcome.
What It Is Not
Decision Lineage is not a log of what happened. A timestamped record of outputs can be complete and still explain nothing about why a decision was reasonable at the time it was made.
Recording is not responsibility. Selection is.
Nor is it Decision Memory. Decision memory preserves the context needed to understand a chain of reasoning; decision lineage is that chain. One holds the material. The other is the thread running through it.
Where Lineage Begins
Lineage does not begin at the moment a decision is announced. It begins earlier โ at the moment a possibility is taken seriously enough to act on.
The moment inspiration becomes intention, responsibility begins.
Every methodological choice upstream of a decision โ which representation, which hypothesis, which data โ is already part of its lineage, whether or not anyone thought to record it as such.
Distinct From Decision Provenance
Decision Lineage is a narrower, more specific claim than the existing research concept of Decision Provenance (Singh, Bacon & Eyers, 2018), which addresses recording data flow through algorithmic systems for accountability โ inputs, transformations, and downstream effects at a systems level. That work is a genuine and valuable neighbor, worth citing directly rather than silently overlapping with.
Decision Lineage, here, is specific to this project's architecture: the continuity of a reasoning trajectory, carried by a Reasoning Vehicle through a chain of PIFRs โ not the general data-flow record of a system.
How It Works
- the reasoning trajectory begins before a decision is announced โ at the moment intention forms
- each methodological choice (representation, method, hypothesis, data selection) becomes part of the lineage
- assumptions and inferences accumulate and remain traceable rather than being discarded once a decision is reached
- lineage is carried forward by a Reasoning Vehicle through a chain of PIFRs
- a decision is only the visible point where this trajectory becomes consequential, crossing a Responsibility Boundary
Relation to PKOS
Decision Lineage operates through the same PIFR chain that carries reasoning forward within the Persistent Semantic Scaffold. It is what becomes visible when that chain is traced backward from a decision to its origin.
Continuity Implication
Without decision lineage, continuity breaks at exactly the point that matters most โ not in the record of what happened, but in the trajectory of reasoning that made it reasonable to happen. A decision without lineage is a decision no one can actually answer for, however well its outcome was logged.
Connected Concepts
- Decision Memory โ preserves the context the lineage needs to be understood
- Responsibility Boundary โ the moment lineage becomes accountable
- Responsibility Attribution โ who is accountable once that boundary is crossed
- Reasoning Vehicle โ carries the lineage forward
- PIFR โ the unit through which lineage is preserved
- Structural Alignment โ the traceable continuity of intent
In Tension With
Decision lineage is not a chain of outcomes. It is a continuity of reasoning.
