๐ Continuity Capital
Continuity Capital is the exponential, compounding value of understanding โ distinct from, and larger than, the value recovered by avoiding reconstruction.
Two Kinds of Value
Theoretical Value answers a bounded question: what would this system have produced if effort hadn't been wasted reconstructing what was already known? That value is real, and it is linear โ a ceiling defined by the work already done.
Continuity Capital answers a different, larger question: what becomes producible once understanding stays connected long enough to combine with other understanding? That value is not bounded by past effort. It grows with every connection that survives.
Why Understanding Compounds and Information Doesn't
Paul Romer's endogenous growth theory established that ideas are non-rival: your using an idea doesn't prevent me from using it too, which is why ideas โ unlike physical capital โ can generate increasing returns rather than diminishing ones. This is the foundation the site's own Paper 7, "The Depreciation of Understanding," builds on directly, naming continuity capital as the asset class this creates.
Martin Weitzman's work on recombinant growth goes further, and answers exactly why understanding compounds in a way raw information does not. A fact has some fixed value sitting on its own. A piece of understanding, connected into an existing structure of reasoning, doesn't just add its own value โ it creates new possible combinations with every other piece of understanding already in that structure. Isolated facts add linearly. Connected understanding grows combinatorially, because the growth isn't in the pieces, it's in the relationships between them, and relationships scale multiplicatively.
The Multiplier Effect
Economics already has a precise name for this mechanism, borrowed here directly: the fiscal multiplier. An initial injection of spending doesn't just add its own value once. It becomes someone else's income, a fraction of which gets re-spent, becoming someone else's income again โ a chain that sums to a multiple of the original injection, not just the injection itself. The size of that multiple depends entirely on how much leaks out of the chain at each round versus how much gets reinvested.
The multiplier idea is borrowed from fiscal economics by analogy; here it is a hypothesis about understanding, to be tested. One piece of promoted reasoning โ carried as a PIFR โ is the initial injection. Every time another agent encounters it and builds on it, rather than merely consuming it, that is a round of re-spending: new downstream reasoning that would not otherwise exist. The multiplier for continuity capital depends on one measurable thing โ the rate at which received understanding gets reinvested rather than absorbed and stopped.
What Breaks the Multiplier
Leakage is not a separate problem from this โ it is the same problem, named from the other side. Reconstruction Cost, Fragmentation, and Ephemeral Processing are exactly where the compounding chain breaks โ reasoning that is shared, but loses enough fidelity in the handoff that the next agent has to reconstruct it rather than reinvest it. A high-leakage system can look productive and still be running close to a multiplier of one: value added, but never compounded.
This is a hypothesis. If measured rebuilding cost proves small, or recovered understanding does not compound, this account is wrong.
Continuity Capital is what Coherence is actually for, economically: connection between pieces of understanding isn't just tidy structure, it's the multiplier itself โ every connection that survives is another round of re-spending in the chain.
