Reconstruction Cost is the cognitive and procedural effort required to reconstruct the reasoning lineage that produced a given institutional state.
The Tipping Point
RC increases as the semantic surface area expands, justifications fragment, cross-references multiply, and historical context deepens.
When RC exceeds practical thresholds, collaboration degrades. Instead of carefully repairing or evolving the structure, the system forces:
- Defensive simplification to reduce cognitive load
- Rewrite temptation (large-scale rewrites to restore coherence)
- Silent reinterpretation of prior intent
The Role of Scaffolding
Persistent semantic scaffolds aim to lower RC by externalizing reasoning lineage and structuring mutation. When the burden of reconstruction is handled by the substrate rather than human memory, systems can scale without fracturing.
